Waynesboro, PA โ€” As spring hits its peak in Franklin County, local residents have a unique, hands-on opportunity to explore the regionโ€™s diverse wildlife. Buttonwood Nature Center (formerly The Institute) has announced a pair of free, introductory bird-watching programs designed to help locals connect with nature and learn the basics of birding.

Whether you are looking for a fun weekend activity for the kids or want a peaceful morning mastering a new outdoor hobby, the center is hosting two distinct sessions tailored to different audiences.

Two Ways to Explore: Families vs. Adults & Teens

To ensure everyone gets the most out of the experience, the programs have been split into two targeted dates:

  • Birding for Beginners โ€” For Families!
    • When: Saturday, May 23 | 10:00 AM โ€“ 11:00 AM
    • Who: All ages are welcome! This session is designed for family-friendly fun, though parents or guardians must accompany their children.
  • Birding for Beginners โ€” For Adults & Teens
    • When: Saturday, May 30 | 10:00 AM โ€“ 11:00 AM
    • Who: Tailored specifically for teenagers and adults looking for a more focused instructional environment.

What to Expect

Led by expert Buttonwood educators, participants will delve into the absolute basics of bird-watching. Attendees will learn how to properly calibrate and use binocularsโ€”a vital skill for catching quick-moving wildlifeโ€”and discover how to identify common regional species by both sight and sound.

The timing couldn’t be better. Late May is a highly active season for local ecosystems, making it prime time to spot fine feathered friends like common warblers, finches, and woodpeckers. In fact, local birding groups have spotted up to 60 different bird species on the property.

Event Details & Registration

While both programs are entirely FREE to the community, space is strictly limited to 20 participants per session to ensure a high-quality, hands-on experience. Because slots are capped, pre-registration is required.

  • What to Wear: Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for outdoor trails.
  • Equipment: Attendees are encouraged to bring their own binoculars if they have them, though the center can provide pairs to borrow for the session.
  • Support: The program is underwritten in part by Buttonwoodโ€™s Naturalist Discovery Series sponsors, Pam and Bruce Rowland, alongside the Conococheague Audubon, with additional local community fund contributions.

How to Sign Up: To secure your spot for either the Family session on May 23rd or the Adults & Teens session on May 30th, visit the official Buttonwood Nature Center website to fill out the online registration form.
